To BC high-school mathematics teachers:

As usual, the UBC Mathematics Department is conducting mathematical
problem-solving workshops in BC schools this academic year. We have already
done a number of workshops at elementary schools, and will also be running
workshops in high schools starting in January. The workshops are 90 minutes
to 2 hours in length and involve 20-30 students working in groups. Two
different problem sets are available for high-school students, roughly at
the grade 8/9 and 11/12 level, although grade 10 students can also be
accommodated. The workshops are conducted by UBC faculty members and
undergraduate students. Most workshops are in the Vancouver area, but we do
have funding through Science World's Scientists in the Schools program that
allows us to also conduct workshops outside the Lower Mainland.

The workshops are being organized this year by Melania Alvarez-Adem, the
Education Coordinator at the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences
(which is affiliated with the UBC Mathematics Department). If you would like
to have one or more workshops at your school, please send an email message
to her at mailto:melania at pims.math.ca, giving her your contact information,
school name and location, grade level(s), expected number of students, and
possible dates. Please make your request by Jan. 9, 2006.

If you have any questions about these workshops, don't hesitate to contact
me as well.
