Metallurgical Engineering
Metallurgical engineers study the properties and characteristics of metals and other materials. They research, develop and monitor the processes for extracting metals from ores, develop new alloys and metals to meet specific requirements, and produce metal and non-metal products.

Examples

Metallurgical engineers research, control and develop processes used in the extraction and refining of metals.

Metallurgical engineers:
Use chemistry to separate valuable minerals and metals from surrounding rock
Come up with new metal mixes (called alloys) which are very strong and lightweight
Figure out how to process metals into sheets, fibres or other forms.

Engineering in your Community

Metallurgical engineers are also involved in the initial evaluation of potential mine sites. If your community lies near metal and mineral deposits, as a metallurgical engineer you could help the band council make decisions regarding mining and mining rights in the area.
